Top 5 goalkeepers across the major European Leagues 2020-21 season

Manuel Neuer-Bayern Munich

The role of a goalkeeper has evolved immensely in the modern game. Initially, the position was all about shot-stopping, but now modern goalkeepers are expected to be playmakers and defenders as well.

Here at Anytime Football, we look at the top five goalkeepers across major European leagues this season.

Jan Oblak

The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper is undoubtedly the best in his position this season.

The Slovenian has conceded just 22 goals in 34 League games so far. He also boasts an 84.2% save percentage, and he has a 75% penalty save ratio this season.

His positioning and commanding of the backline have helped Diego Simeone put together an exceptional bank four at Atletico Madrid.

 Ederson

The Brazilian has been in exceptional form for Manchester City this season, and the 27-year-old has 18 clean sheets in the Premier League so far.

He is close to guiding Manchester City to the Premier League title, and his contribution in the Champions League has been outstanding as well.

Apart from his goalkeeping ability, Ederson is an excellent sweeper-keeper who can defend higher up the pitch and initiate attacks with his exceptional passing range.

Edouard Mendy

The Chelsea keeper has been exceptional since his move to Stamford Bridge, and his £22 million transfer is proving to be a bargain.

The 29-year-old has the second most clean sheets in the Premier League, and he was instrumental to Chelsea’s with over Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Senegalese produced exceptional saves against Karim Benzema to guide his side to a morale-boosting win earlier this week.

Thibaut Courtois

The Belgian initially struggled to adapt following his move to Real Madrid, but he has been outstanding over the past year.

He helped Real Madrid win the title last year, and he has been crucial to their title charge this year.

The 28-year-old has conceded just 24 goals in the league this season, and he has a save percentage of 76.6%.

Despite Real Madrid’s exit from the Champions League, Courtois produced an incredible display in the second leg against Chelsea.

Samir Handanovic

Inter Milan have won the Scudetto after 11 years, and the 36-year-old shot-stopper was key to their success this season.

His 72.1% save percentage is the second-best in the league, and he has 14 clean sheets to his name this season.
