The Spanish giants were stunned at home by the newcomers’ Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League.

Real Madrid’s shocking loss to Moldovan club Sheriff Tiraspol was the headline-grabbing thing in matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League.

Sheriff, who are playing in their first-ever Champions League season, left Los Blancos behind their trail with a shocking 2-1 victory, which included a last-minute winning goal from Sebastien Thill.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side were handed their first defeat of the season last night after embarking on an eight-match unbeaten run across all competition.

The Spanish media have made a meal out of Madrid’s shock loss (h/t The Daily Mail), with Mundo Deportivo’s headlines reading “ Detained by the Sheriff”. The front cover also read: “modest Moldovan side beat a Madrid team who could only score a penalty against the group leaders.”

In fact, Madrid’s only goal in the defeat came via Karim Benzema’s penalty in the second half.

Another outlet, AS also had his headline run: “ The Sheriff imposes his law” and also described Ancelotti’s team as overconfident.

However, the Italian manager feels that Madrid deserved to win the fixture. Ancelotti said: “I’m a little sad as I think we deserved to win.

“You could say we had bad luck, we lost the game on the small details, they scored their goals on the counter-attack and from a throw-in. We had a lot of shots at goal but sometimes luck deserts you in games.

“Everything went well for them, everything went wrong for us.”

Sheriff’s debut campaign in UCL is turning out to be a dream one as they are currently leading Group B with 6 points, ahead of Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
