The inaugural Copa EuroAmerica will be played next year, confirms UEFA and CONMEBOL.

According to Daily Mail, Euro 2020 champions Italy are set to play Copa America winners Argentina next year in the inaugural Copa EuroAmerica, confirms UEFA and CONMEBOL.

Copa EuroAmerica is the new tournament that will enhance the cooperation between the two continental governing bodies UEFA and CONMEBOL.

Napoli’s home ground, Diego Maradona Stadium, is said to be a top contender to host the tournament in 2022.

The tournament will also serve as a tribute to Maradona, who had enjoyed great spells in his career in both Argentina and Italy.

Roberto Mancini’s Italian side enjoyed a terrific run in the European Championship 2020, beating England in the finals to lift the trophy.

Elsewhere, Lionel Messi inspired La Albiceleste to the Copa America title as they got the better of rivals Brazil in the finals.

UEFA on the new intercontinental match: “A joint office will also be opened in London to work on future projects.

“By reaching this agreement, UEFA and CONMEBOL express their commitment to the development of football beyond their geographical zones, as a bridge uniting people, countries, continents and cultures.

“The UEFA executive committee and the CONMEBOL Council also expressed a strong willingness to continue collaborating on other issues of mutual interest going forward.”

Both UEFA and CONMEBOL are against FIFA’s new plans to revise the calendar year with a potential World Cup tournament every two years.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin had earlier offered his thoughts on the biennial world cup: “We can decide not to play in it. As far as I know, the South Americans are on the same page. So good luck with a World Cup like that.”
