Manchester United
After snatching a point in their game against Chelsea last Saturday, Manchester United will turn their attention to securing a top-of-the-table finish in the Europa League on Thursday.
The Red Devils needed a late goal from summer signing Casemiro to snatch a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge last Saturday to keep their quest for the top-four finish alive
They also needed an injury-time winner in their last outing in the Europa League against Omonia Nicosia (W 1-0)-a win which boosted their chances of finishing in the top two places in this group.
Although almost assured of a place in the knockout play-off round, they will want to beat Sheriff Tiraspol in their penultimate group game as they aim to top the group ahead of Real Sociedad, whom they trail by three points but play on matchday six.
Having won their last three UEL games, while keeping two clean sheets in those games, Erik ten Hag will be wary of the loss of defender Raphaël Varane through injury, particularly as both Man United’s UEL home games this term were decided by a single-goal (W1, L1). The Frenchman was instrumental in the Red Devils keeping three consecutive clean sheets at home (W2, D1).
In his absence, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire will have to step up as Man United seek to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to seven games.
Possible Manchester United starting line-up
David de Gea; Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw; Casemiro, Scott McTominay; Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Anthony; Marcus Rashford.
Injured: Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Anthony Martial. Raphael Varane
Doubtful: Donny van de Beek
Suspended: None
Sheriff Tiraspol
Sheriff Tiraspol will look to end a three-game losing run in the Europa League when they travel to Old Trafford on Thursday.
After recording a huge 3-0 win against Omonia Nicosia in the opening round of the Europa League season, the visitors have lost twice to Real Sociedad and Manchester United in the following three games; losing all three games without scoring a goal.
As a result, they come into this tie sitting in third place, three points ahead of Omonia Nicosia. Mathematically, they still have a shred of opportunity to finish in the top two. But to do that, they must win by at least two goals; a feat that could have been termed possible by this time last year when they took the UCL by storm.
The Moldovan side underwhelmed compared to last term’s breakout European campaign but are still on course for the UEFA Europa Conference League via a third-place finish.
Possible Sheriff Tiraspol starting line-up
Maksym Koval; Renan Guedes, Gaby Kiki, Stjepan Radeljic, Patrick Kpozo; Mohamed Diop, Cedric Badolo, Abou Ouattara; Ibrahim Akanbi, Pernambuco, Felipe Vizeu.
Injured: None
Doubtful: None
Suspended: Armel Zohouri
