In June, European champions Italy and Copa America winners Argentina are set to meet in the first edition of a new intercontinental event.

Wembley has been chosen as the venue for the match known as the ‘Finalissima’.

According to Sky Sports, the game will highlight the renewed alliance between UEFA and the South American confederation CONMEBOL.

The two federations recently joined hands in opposition to FIFA’s proposal to play a World Cup every two years. It will be interesting to see how things unfold during the global summit of FIFA’s 211 nation member associations, which will take place on Monday.

Italy managed to win the European Championships earlier this year when they beat England in the finals of the competition thanks to a shootout.

Meanwhile, Argentina claimed the South American crown with a win over bitter rivals Brazil in the final.

The match is expected to be a showpiece event, and both teams will be desperate to prove their quality in the intercontinental match-up.

In terms of current form, Argentina have done reasonably well since winning the Copa America, but Italy have struggled in recent months.

Roberto Mancini’s men have not booked their place in the World Cup next year, and it remains to be seen whether the Italians can secure qualification to the main event in Qatar by winning the playoffs.

Italy missed out on the 2018 World Cup, and if they fail to make it to the World Cup next year, it would be a devastating blow for the nation. Mancini has an exceptional squad at his disposal, and it remains to be seen whether they can get the job done in the playoffs.
