The Netherlands picked up a 2-0 win over Austria in the European Championships earlier tonight to book their place in the last 16 of the competition.

Goals from Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries sealed the three points for the De Boer’s men.

Here at Anytime Football, we look at the major talking points from tonight’s contest.

Denzel Dumfries has been a revelation

The 25-year-old PSV defender was outstanding against Austria tonight, and he has managed to build on the impressive performance he put up against Ukraine in the previous game.

The highly-rated full-back scored the match-winning goal against Ukraine, and he has followed it up with another goal against Austria tonight.

Defensively he was reliable, and he won the penalty that resulted in Depay’ goal as well.

It was a complete performance from the 25-year-old defender, and clubs across Europe will be vying for his services this summer.

Frenkie de Jong – the orchestrator

The Barcelona midfielder had an excellent outing against Austria tonight, and he controlled the game with his calm and composed passing.

He managed to create chances for his teammates with his flair, and he was disciplined defensively.

The Dutch midfielder ended the game with most duals, most tackles and most interceptions.

The return of Matthijs de Ligt

The Netherlands conceded two goals in their opening game of the European Championships, and it was evident that they were missing the defensive quality of Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt.

The Juventus defender was back in action tonight, and the Dutch managed to grind out an impressive clean sheet.

The former Ajax defender was imperious at the back, and he kept the back four well organised with his communication and leadership. The Netherlands will need him to stay fit if they want to do well in the European Championships this season.
