USA

The USA welcome El Salvador to the Lower.com Field (Columbus) on January 27th as they resume their World Cup qualification campaign.

Sitting pretty comfortably in the second position and a solitary point separating them from first placed Canada, the USMNT fancy themselves with a real shot at usurping their North American neighbours in the first position and finish as group leaders.

With four wins, three draws and one loss, the road to Qatar 2022 has not been very smooth for the ‘Yanks’ and head coach Gregg Berhalter. They have not always looked impressive but have shown that they have what it takes to appear in Qatar come next winter after having previously missed out in Russia 2018.

In their previous encounter against Jamaica, they had an opportunity to maintain a perfect record in the qualifying rounds when Timothy Weah put them in front in the eleventh minute, only for Westham powerhouse Michail Antonio to equalise immediately with the contest ending 1-1.

Possible USMNT starting line-up

Matt Turner; Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, Walker Zimmerman, DeAndre Yedlin; Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah; Timothy Weah, Ricardo Pepi, Christian Pulisic.

Injured: Zack Steffens

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None

El-Salvador

For Hugo Perez, this phase of qualifying has been all about missed opportunities.

La Selecta face an uphill task if they are to book a spot in Qatar. Currently, eight points behind Mexico for a guaranteed place in the finals after eight matches played.

In their entire history, El Salvador have never won a game against the USA, having played 24 times, with the Americans outscoring them 15-2 in their last five matches.

Perez’s team have fought hard in the group stages but yet have nothing to show for it, losing all three of their away games so far. Perez came up with a brilliant game plan to stifle the Americans in their previous encounter, forcing them into mistakes and will be expected to do the same this time.

Possible El Salvador starting line-up

Mario Gonzalez; Bryan Tamacas, Eduardo Vigil, Roberto Carlos Dominguez, Alex Roldan; Darwin Ceren, Christian Martinez, Jairo Mauricio Henriquez; Bryan Landaverde; Joaquin Rivas, Marvin Monterrosa.

Injured: None

Doubtful: None
