Central Coast Mariners missed a chance to guarantee themselves a third-place finish this season as they succumbed to a 0-2 loss to Newcastle Jets on Wednesday.

The hosts who entered into the fixture in third place were stunned by their visitors who are currently occupying the bottom place in the A-League standings.

After going 14 games without a win—a run that started since late February—Newcastle Jets left Gosford with three points in the bag and with their first win 100 days..

The result ensures that the visitors who still have two games to play have a chance of finishing higher than the 12th place this season provided the win their games and others results favour them.

Although the hosts began the game brightly, it was their visitors who took the lead in the 27th minute through Roy O’Donovan. The Jets striker picked out the bottom left corner after being set up by Archie Goodwin. The goal was his 7th for the club this season.

Six minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead for the evening when Lucas Mauragis left footed shot from the left side of the box found the top left corner.

The goal proved decisive as the stunned hosts could not find their way back into the game despite their best efforts in the second half.
