Wellington Phoenix 1-2 Newcastle: Yuel, O’Donovan goals help Jets with the first win

Ulises Davila-Wellington Phoenix

Newcastle Jets ended their losing streak with an away win against Wellington Phoenix.

Newcastle Jets have registered their first win of the season after defeating Wellington Phoenix 2-1 away in A-League.

The contest of bottom dwellers was indeed an exciting watch as both the clubs pushed to pick up their first win.

It was Jets who struck first in the opening quarter after a goal from the forward Valentino Yuel.

The home side were the one who looked more promising in the attack but unfortunate to make their mark as Luke Devere’s header forced a stunning save from Jack Duncan and Ulises Davila had his long-range effort denied by the woodwork.

Duncan displayed a clinical performance as he kept Phoenix from breaching Newcastle’s defence for the larger parts of the game.

Phoenix doubled their lead early on in the second half when Roy O’Donovan made a precise finish, catching keeper Stefan Marinovic off guard.

Jets nearly killed the game in the 80th minute but Marinovic made a stunning save to deny Nigel Boogard’s acrobatic effort.

Phoenix pulled back one in the 85th minute after substitute Blake Archbold made an awful foul, allowing Davila to score from the penalty spot. Nonetheless, the hosts couldn’t do much in the remaining minutes as Jets ended up as winners to end their losing streak.

It remains to be seen how Newcastle will build on from this win as they take on Western Sydney Wanderers next week.
