Manchester United are set to finalise the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

According to The Athletic, the Premier League side have already agreed on a fee with the Spanish club, and the 28-year-old defender is set to sign a four-year contract with the Red Devils.

The Premier League side will have an option of a fifth year, and they are paying a fee of around £35 million for the World Cup winner.

Varane is in the final year of his contract with Real Madrid, and the Spanish giants were under pressure to cash in on him this summer.

As for Manchester United, they have landed a massive bargain, and the £35 million fee should look like a masterstroke next season.

Varane is one of the best defenders in the world, and he could have a tremendous impact at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils needed to sign a quality defender like him to partner Harry Maguire at the back, and the 28-year-old could help Manchester United launch a proper title challenge next season.

The Red Devils finished second in the Premier League last year, and the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane could help close the gap with cross-town rivals Manchester City.

The reasons why Real Madrid were open to selling France international are the financial impact of the pandemic and the extensive cost of redeveloping Santiago Bernabeu.

Furthermore, the player’s agent informed Florentino Perez that the defender wants a new footballing challenge outside of Spain.

The player was unwilling to sign a contract extension with Real Madrid, and the Spanish club couldn’t risk letting him leave on a free transfer next summer.
