Sergio Aguero set a Premier League record with 12 hat-trick and became the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history with 177 goals. Alan Shearer, who is top scorer in Premier League history, said the Manchester City star remains the best striker in the competition “by a mile”.

Incidently, Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick in the 6-1 victory against Aston Villa was his 12th Premier League hat-trick, taking him past Shearer.

It also took his overall goal tally to 177, surpassing Thierry Henry of France, as the highest-scoring foreign player, while moving joint-fourth with Frank Lampard in the all-time scorers’ chart.

Last year Alan Shearer explained why Aguero edged Henry and Didier Drogba as the league’s best overseas striker. Now the competition’s all-time top scorer says at 31 years old the Argentinian remains the current competition’s best.

“He is still the best striker in the Premier League by a mile,” says Shearer, who names Aguero in his Matchweek 22 team of the week.

Aguero’s 12 Premier League hat-tricks:

2011: City 3-0 Wigan Athletic (2011)

2014: City 4-1 Tottenham (4 goals)

2015: City 6-0 QPR

2015: City 6-1 Newcastle (5 goals)

2016: Chelsea 0-3 City

2017: Watford 0-6 City

2018: City 3-1 Newcastle

2018: City 5-1 Leicester (4 goals)

2018: City 6-1 Huddersfield Town

2019: City 3-1 Arsenal

2019: City 6-0 Chelsea

2020: Aston Villa 1-6 City
