Álvaro Morata scored the opening goal for Atlético in the first minute at the Balaídos Stadium. The Spaniard connected a cross from Ángel Correa. However, the home side managed to level things up on the 49th minute when Fran Beltrán found the net with a neat volley.
Atletico Madrid are now third in the table; three points clear of Sevilla in the fourth place.
The Spanish outfit will be determined to finish in the top three and secure their place in the Champions League group stages.
They are unlikely to win the league as Real Madrid are comfortably ahead in the race.
Simeone will want his men to finish the domestic season strongly now and make their mark in the European competition.
Atletico Madrid managed to eliminate the Champions league holders Liverpool before the lockdown and they will be hoping to go all the way this year.
The rest of the tournament could be played in a world cup style knockout format and Atletico’s style of play could benefit them in the one-off contests.
