Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta revealed earlier this week that he wants to keep David Luiz at the club beyond this summer.

The defender will be out of contract soon and Arteta believes that he should be given an extension because he is a role model on and off the pitch.

However, the Brazilian dropped a disastrous performance against Manchester City and now his future is up in the air once again.

Luiz’s failed clearance allowed Sterling to score and he also gave away a penalty. Luiz was then sent off and Arsenal had to deal with City’s world-class attack with just ten men.

It is evident that Luiz is past his peak and he is no longer ready for this level. Arteta should look to move him on and bring someone younger and better if he wants his team to do well.

After the game, Arteta said: “I don’t know what will happen with his contract. I know what happened today. There was a reason why I didn’t select him from the start. He had to play because Pablo got injured. He tried but it didn’t work out for the team. But my opinion of him hasn’t changed from the moment I joined the team and it won’t change because of a difficult performance tonight.”

Meanwhile, Luiz is not the only problem for Arteta right now.

Mesut Ozil’s future is uncertain as well. He is the highest earner at the club but he wasn’t even in the matchday squad against Manchester City.

The 31-year-old has not been at his best for a while now but he is draining Arsenal of a lot of money through wages. He will also need to be moved on so that the club can invest on someone better.

Ozil is on a £350,000-a-week contract and he has previously claimed that he won’t leave the club until his contract expires. It is clear that he wants the money regardless of whether he gets to play.

Arsenal are lumbered with a high earning failure for now and they will have to find a way to sort the situation out soon.
