The 2019/20 Premier League season got underway on last Saturday, with many of the new signings made their debut for the respective clubs.
Here we look at how their performances were on matchday 1.
Willian and Gabriel Magalhaes – Arsenal
The Brazilian duo had a dream debut, helping the Gunners defeat Fulham 4-0. Gabriel found the scoresheet while putting a good shift in defence. Willian, who moved from Chelsea, racked up two assists as his creativity was much useful in the win.
Rodrigo, Meslier and Robin Koch – Leeds United
Marcelo Bielsa fielded three debutants in the 4-3 defeat against Liverpool. Despite the result, the Leeds were praised for their courageous display. Robin Koch, who was signed from Freiburg, had a bad game to remember as his errors at the backline proved costly.
Illan Meslier was a surprise pick over regular goalkeeper Kiko Casilla. The French goalkeeper did concede four goals – two of them being penalties – and it can be attributed to the Whites’ sluggish defence.
Rodrigo was brought on in the second half only to concede a penalty after committing a silly mistake. Leeds would have picked up a draw hadn’t been for Rodrigo’s error.
James Rodriguez, Allan and Doucoure – Everton
The three of the new signings shone in the Toffees’ emphatic win over Tottenham in North London. James was at his creative best while Doucoure and Allan took care of the defensive needs.
Pierre-Emile Hojberg, Matt Doherty – Tottenham
Both the players had their chances against Everton on Sunday’s clash but failed to stamp their authority. Their experience wasn’t enough for Spurs who succumbed to Carlo Ancelotti’s men.
Jamal Lewis, Jeff Hendrick and Callum Wilson – Newcastle United
Wilson scored the only goal in Newcastle’s win against West Ham while Jamal Lewis was impressive on the flanks. Hendrick was the pick of the lot after scoring a belter and setting up one more.
Timothy Castagne – Leicester City
Leicester’s new 18m pounds signing was all over West Brom in the 3-0 win. Castagne scored the opener to break the deadlock.
Timo Werner and Kai Havertz – Chelsea
The most anticipated debuts of the German duo happened against Brighton. Werner was rampant throughout the game and won the penalty for Chelsea’s goal. Meanwhile, Havertz looked sluggish all the time.
Adam Lallana (Brighton)
The former Liverpool star had a bad game to remember as he was forced off the field right before the half time due to injury.
Other debutants: Marcal (Wolves), Eberiche Eze ( Crystal Palace), Grady Diangana, Callum Robinson (West Brom)
