The young Argentine striker has been in sensational form for River Plate this season.

Barcelona have turned their attention towards River Plate striker Julian Alvarez, who has been in great goal-scoring form this season.

According to the Spanish outlet AS, Barca have made Alvarez their priority after their deal for Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi fell through.

Having already been depleted with enough options upfront, Barca’s attacking woes have deepened with Memphis Depay’s latest injury.

New manager Xavi is keen on bringing in a new striker in the January transfer window and has reportedly identified River Plate’s Julian Alvarez as an ideal option.

The 21-year-old has recently concluded a terrific season with River Plate, helping them win the Argentine league title.

Alvarez has been lethal in front of the goal, racking up 20 goals and 12 assists in 35 league games.

The Argentine prodigy is said to be having a release clause worth 25m euros and hence he suits the cash-strapped Catalan giants.

However, given his bargain transfer fee, a host of European giants would look to battle for Alvarez in the transfer market.

In the wake of the Champions League elimination, Barca president Joan Laporta insisted that there would be new signings in January regardless of the financial crisis.

Barca have been lacking a nominal striker since the departure of Suarez to Atletico Madrid.

Alvarez, nicknamed Spider, has a higher ceiling and can be a top addition to the Catalan La Liga giants. His strength lies in dribbling, smart movements, and deadly instinct inside the box.
