Chelsea picked up a routine 2-0 win over Wolves to secure their place in the Champions League for the next season.
Two first half goals from Olivier Giroud and Mason Mount were enough to guide the Blues safely into the top four.
Both players scored in the first half added time and Frank Lampard’s men did well to hold on to their clean sheet in the second half. They have been quite poor at the back all season but they showed grit to grind out the win today.
Mason Mount scored the first goal through a controversial free-kick from 25-yards. It was a similar situation When Chelsea conceded second goal against Liverpool, which spiralled into a side-line confrontation between coaching staffs of two teams. Mount’s goal from the free-kick left Chelsea manager with an awkward smile.
But he erupted into joy, when Giroud scored showing a great alacrity and improvisation in front of the goal within 130 seconds.
Chelsea vs Wolves – Results
Wolves went into the game wanting to secure Europa League football for the next season and they will be thoroughly disappointed with the outcome.
Spurs have overtaken them in the sixth place and Wolves will now have to win the Europa League or wait for Chelsea to win the FA Cup in order to play European football next season.
Wolves drop to seventh on 59 points, below Tottenham Hotspur on goal difference.
Chelsea finished the season fourth, with 66 points. They will be hoping to build on this and challenge for the title next year.
Despite a transfer ban and Eden Hazard’s departure, Lampard has managed to steer them into the top four and it is a praiseworthy achievement from the former Blues midfielder.
As for Wolves, they will have to improve their defence over the summer in order to break into the top four next season.
