Bartomeu has confirmed Setien has been relieved of the duties.

Quique Setien‘s departure looks imminent, with Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu confirming that the former Real Betis gaffer has been sacked.

As per reports, Bartomeu has said ” Setien is out” after a meeting with Eric Abidal, Barca’s Sporting Director. However, the official decision from the club could be expected on Monday.

The speculations regarding Setien’s exit have fuelled following the horror show in the Champions League against Bayern Munich. The Bavarians battered Barca 8-2 in the quarter-finals. The exit meant that Barcelona had gone four seasons without making an impact in the competition.

Furthermore, the former Las Palmas has been largely scrutinized for not leading the Catalans to any of the domestic titles.

Barca are seemingly advanced in the search for the new manager, with Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman being considered as the frontrunners for the job.

Koeman is said to have the edge owing to his connection with the Blaugrana as a player in the past. The Dutchman currently serves as the head coach of The Netherlands senior team.

In the wake of the Champions League exit, the Blaugrana are planning for an exodus of first-team players consisting of Luis Suarez, Samuel Umtiti, Ivan Rakitic and so on. Only Lionel Messi, Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre ter Stegen have been deemed not transferable.

Riqui Puig and Ansu Fati have shone in an otherwise dull campaign for Barca and could continue their development as first-team rosters next season.
