Getafe 1-0 Barcelona: Jaime Mata penalty helps the hosts seal a shocking win

Frenkie de Jong-Barcelona

The Blaugrana have been defeated by the robust Getafe side.

Getafe have edged out Barcelona in a shocking 1-0 win in La Liga at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Barca were clearly the better side in the first half; however, they couldn’t make better use of the chances.

Lionel Messi hit the post from the edge of the crossbar while Antoine Griezmann fired his shot over the post after being picked out by Frenkie de Jong.

Getafe were handed a penalty after a foul by De Jong on Djene Dakonam. The penalty was a harsh call, but nevertheless, Jaime Mata stepped up to give his side the lead.

As expected, Getafe opted to defend the lead and stayed compact, which Barca failed to breach through.

Perhaps, Getafe could have sealed the game much earlier were it not for the missed chances from Cucho Hernandez. The Colombian striker was left one on one with Neto, but he fired a reckless shot over the crossbar. His previous chance was denied by the post.

Substitutions were thrown in from Ronald Koeman in the final stage, but the robust defence of Getafe proved too good for Barca.

The defeat comes on the back of a draw against Sevilla before the international break.

Koeman will be a man under pressure after leading his side to a draw and a defeat in the last two games in La Liga.

Sergino Dest made his full debut while Pedri started the game in place of Coutinho.

Getafe are off to an impressive start this season, winning three of their 5 games.

Meanwhile, Barca have to prepare for the Champions League fixture against Ferencvaros in no time.
