Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano will continue their quest for a third-straight season on the top flight of Spanish football when they welcome Getafe to the capital of Spain.

The hosts have begun the season with three wins, one draw and four losses, leaving them in 10th place after eight rounds of games. They have thirty more rounds of football to secure a place in La Liga next season, but the doubters are already amassing after their abysmal 3-1 loss to newcomers Almería in the last round.

The defeat marked their fifth consecutive La Liga fixture won by the home team on the day, a streak Vallecano will hope to continue here. Andoni Iraola’s side have won their last two league fixtures at home, with each of those wins seeing them score two goals.

After the loss, Iraola said his side needed to iron out the “many errors” that has plagued his side recently.

With a four-point cushion to the drop, the hosts are in a relatively safe position for now. But a repeat of last September’s 3-0 La Liga home win over Getafe looks unlikely given that they are on an ongoing six-game streak without a La Liga clean sheet.

Possible Rayo Vallecano starting line-up

Diego Lopez; Ivan Balliu, Florian Lejeune, Alejandro Catena, Fran Garcia; Isi Palazon, Unai Lopez, Pathe Ciss, Salvi Sanchez; Oscar Trejo, Camello Perez.

Injured: Ruben de Tomas

Doubtful: Andres Martin

Suspended: None

Getafe

Getafe will look to end their two-game losing run this Friday when they travel to Madrid to face Vallecano.

The visitors have lost their last two outings against Real Valladolid (3-2) and Real Madrid (1-0) last time out. Whilst few would begrudge them a loss to Real Madrid, particularly when they kept the European Champions to a modest 1-0 scoreline, Getafe’s second-worst eight-game start (by points earned) in a decade illustrates the difficult position they’re already in.

While Getafe appears to be flirting with relegation for a third consecutive season, manager Quique Sánchez Flores was handed a two-year contract extension in May 2022. To their credit, Getafe won two games just before the international break.

Their most recent close encounter with Madrid was something that Quique drew some comfort and encouragement from, particularly given the 3+ goals his side had conceded in each of their four prior La Liga defeats of 2022/23. The coach also expressed his belief that having Luis Milla starting back-to-back games for the first time this season should boost their goal-scoring opportunities.

Possible Getafe starting line-up

David Soria; Damian Suarez, Djene Dakonam, Stefan Mitrovic, Domingos Duarte, Fabricio Angileri; Carles Aleña, Angel Algobia, Luis Milla; Borja Mayoral, Enes Ünal.

Injured: None

Doubtful: None
