Real Madrid 2–0 Eibar: Asensio, Benzema combine to keep defending champions in title race

Los Blancos picked up a comprehensive win after goals from Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema.

Real Madrid picked up a comfortable 2-0 win against Eibar at home, thus collecting three points to go ahead of arch-rivals Barcelona in the league table.

Prior to the game, Los Blancos were well aware of the stacked fixtures, which will see them face Liverpool and Barcelona in the coming week. Hence, they were looking for a win to gain morale.

Marco Asensio, who looks to be finding his form of late, provided the breakthrough right before the break and Karim Benzema put the game to bed by adding another one in the second half.

The French striker has been stellar for Real of late, racking up 18 goals in La Liga and fourth in the top scorers list this season. Furthermore, he has found the back of the nets 7 times in the last 5 games (including two doubles) and he was rightfully chosen as the La Liga player of March.

Zinedine Zidane’s were unbeaten in their last 11 games across all competitions and after today’s result, they have leapfrogged Barcelona to second place in the La Liga table.

The defence also fared well in the absence of Sergio Ramos, who would be a huge miss for the games against Liverpool and Barca.

However, it remains to be seen whether this kind of performance would be repeated this Wednesday when they face Jurgen Klopp’s man in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
