Barcelona have been dealt a devastating blow with striker Sergio Aguero set to retire from football due to heart problems.

According to Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, the player has already made the decision regarding his future and Barcelona have been informed of the situation.

The two parties are hoping to hold a press conference to clarify the situation next week.

Aguero moved to Barcelona earlier on in the summer on a free transfer and the Argentine international wanted to reunite with his compatriot Lionel Messi at Camp Nou.

However, Messi ended up leaving Barcelona after the two parties failed to agree on a new contract.

Barcelona are already struggling without a recognised goal scorer and the situation involving Aguero will come as a massive blow for them.

It makes the signing of a new attacker in January the main priority for the Spanish club and it will be interesting to see if Xavi Hernandez can bring in a proper goalscorer.

Barcelona have had a disappointing season so far and Ronald Koeman was recently shown the door after a miserable start.

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has taken over at Camp Nou and it remains to be seen whether the former Spanish international can turn things around and get Barcelona back into the title challenge.

As for Sergio Aguero, it will be a massive disappointment for the player who still has a lot to offer at the top level.

The Argentine will undoubtedly go down as a Premier League legend for his contributions at Manchester City and he has also made his mark in Spain with Atletico Madrid prior to that.
