Newcastle United

Newcastle United will look to take one step closer to Premier League survival when they welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Tyneside on Saturday.

The ‘Toon’ have clawed themselves out of the PL danger zone with a series of brilliant performances in recent times. They are currently on a seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League (PL).

The run started with a draw vs Manchester United to finish off 2021. Since then, they have won four times to take themselves from the foot of the table to a position of relative safety.

Ahead of this round of games, they are sitting in 14th place with 25 points. Considering that 37 points would have been enough to survive eight of the last nine PL campaigns, the Magpies can all but secure their top-flight status with just four more wins from the remaining 13 rounds.

Given that only defending champions Manchester City have taken maximum points at St. James Park over the last eight PL games, Eddie Howe’s side will fancy their chances of getting maximum points from this game in front of their passionate fans.

But the former Bournemouth and Burnley coach will have to do so without the services of January signing Kieran Trippier, Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis, Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson, who are all missing with varying injuries.

Possible Newcastle starting line-up

Martin Dubravka; Emi Krafth, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock; Ryan Fraser, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes.

Injured: Kieran Trippier, Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis, Matt Ritchie and Callum Wilson

Brighton

Brighton’s push for European qualification has disappeared in recent times following a run of poor results.

The Seagulls have won just two PL games this year (D3, L3) leaving them sitting in tenth place ahead of this round of games.

They come into this tie on the back of a disappointing 2-0 loss to Aston Villa – their third loss in a row. The loss also made it three straight games without a goal for Graham Potter’s side, making them one of the worst sides over the last five games.

They have a good record against Newcastle though and will fancy their chance of getting a win here. Their manager, Graham Potter, is unbeaten in all of his managerial clashes with the ‘Toon’ (W2, D3), while Brighton have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four PL meetings away at Newcastle.

Meanwhile, Potter has a fit squad with Jeremy Sarmiento, the only player missing through injury.

Possible Brighton starting line-up

Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk, Marc Cucurella; Yves Bissouma, Jakub Moder; Tariq Lamptey, Adam Lallana, Leandro Trossard; Danny Welbeck.

Injured: Jeremy Sarmiento

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
