PSG star Lionel Messi’s struggles continued against Lille.

Lionel Messi endured another disappointing night in PSG’s Ligue 1 game against Lille.

Despite Les Parisiens managing to win the game 2-1 – thanks to a late winner from Angel Di Maria, Messi’s goal drought extended to five games in the French top-flight this season.

Things also got aggravated for the 34-year-old when he was substituted at half-time due to what looked like fitness issues.

Messi hasn’t gone five matches without finding the nets since October 2020 and the worrying fact is that he had attempted 15 shots in Ligue 1 this season without any success. (h/t Mirror)

On the contrary, the former Barcelona man has scored three goals in Champions League this season, with all of his strikes coming against top sides like Manchester City and RB Leipzig.

Pochettino explains Messi’s substitution at halftime.

Messi’s substitution at half-time raised everyone’s eyebrows as it did during the start of the season against Lyon.

However, Mauricio Pochettino explained that Messi’s withdrawal was due to precautionary measures, with doctors advising the former Barca star not to continue.

The Paris Saint Germain boss said (h/t Goal): “We have to wait. We spoke with the doctor. It’s a precaution. He couldn’t go on, but it’s not a big issue. He will be available for the next game.”

Mauro Icardi replaced his compatriot in the second half and PSG managed to pull off a thrilling win after Di Maria’s late goal.

With the victory, Les Parisiens have taken a huge 10 point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
