Rennes 2-0 PSG: Pochettino’s men crash to their first league defeat of the season | Ligue 1 2021-22

Mauricio Pochettino-Tottenham Hotspur

Paris Saint-Germain crashed to their first league defeat of the season when they were beaten by Rennes 2-0 away from home earlier today.

Goals from Gaetan Laborde and Flavien Tait wrapped up a memorable win for the hosts.

Here at Anytime football, we look at the main reasons why PSG succumbed to a humiliating defeat on their travels today.

Exceptional squad but a mediocre team

Paris Saint-Germain have several world-class footballers at their disposal and their front three is arguably the best in the world.

However, the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar are not as strong as a unit and their tendency to highlight their individuality ends up costing the side eventually.

There is a distinct lack of chemistry in the squad and PSG will have to learn to play as a team if they want to dominate European football in the near future.

Pochettino’s style of play

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager is famous for his high intensity pressing football but he has players at his disposal who are not well suited to his philosophy.

The likes of Di Maria, Messi, Neymar and Mbappe are exceptional footballers but they are not workhorses and therefore Pochettino has struggled to execute his hard-working style of football at Paris Saint-Germain with them in his team.

The French outfit have invested millions of pounds into their playing squad in order to assemble a galactico squad and Pochettino will have to switch his tactics around to fit the top class players at his disposal.

Missed chances

One of the main reasons behind tonight’s defeat was the number of chances Paris Saint-Germain missed against Rennes.

The French outfit attempted 13 shots in the game, which is their highest tally without registering a shot on target in a Ligue 1 game since 2006-07.

The likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe missed glorious opportunities in the first half and Messi had an exceptional free-kick denied by the crossbar.
