Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has signed a new contract at the club until the summer of 2024, with the option for a further year.

The Switzerland international was heavily linked with a move to Roma earlier in the summer but talks with the Italian club collapsed weeks ago and Xhaka is set to continue with the Gunners now.

The 28-year-old midfielder was in outstanding form during the European Championships with his country and he will be hoping to carry that momentum into the Premier League season with the Gunners.

Despite his inconsistencies at the London club, Xhaka is a quality player who could make a big difference for Arsenal this season. He is undoubtedly the best passer at the club and he could form a quality partnership with Lokonga and Partey this season.

The Swiss international has now sorted out his long term future and he can focus on his football now.

The midfielder is one of the most experienced players at the club and his leadership qualities could be very useful for the Londoners in the coming seasons.

Arsenal have made a poor start to the Premier League season after a defeat to Brentford last week and it will be interesting to see if they can turn their form around quickly.

Xhaka will be hoping to help his side qualify for Champions League football this season. A club of Arsenal’s stature should be playing in the premier European competition every year.
