Aston Villa 0-0 Wolves: Impressive goalkeeping displays from Martinez, Patricio keep the contest goalless

Aston Villa were held to a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League earlier tonight.

Both teams managed to cancel each other out in an entertaining contest at Villa Park.

Dean Smith’s side will be disappointed to have come away with just a point from this game after the number of chances they had to open the scoring.

Aston Villa managed to hit the crossbar twice in the opening 16 minutes through the likes of Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had their fair share of chances as well and the Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez produced a stunning save from Pedro Neto to keep his side on level terms in the second half.

The visitors continued to push for the opening goal and their best chance came when Connor Cody hit the post with a header and Romain Saiss failed to hit the target with the rebound from two yards out.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers captain was denied again in the second half with a trailing left leg from the Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Meanwhile, Rui Patricio produced a quality save in stoppage time to deny Aston Villa a late winner.

The Portuguese international saved Ollie Watkins’ effort on target and the rebound was blazed over by Konsa.

Tonight’s defeat leaves Aston Villa 9th in the Premier League table with 40 points and Wolverhampton Wanderers are now five points behind their West Midlands rivals in 12th place.

Aston Villa were without star midfielder Jack Grealish tonight and they will be wondering what could have been had the England international played.

Grealish has been outstanding for Villa this season and he could have made a huge difference for Dean Smith in the stalemate tonight.
