Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer especially because of the Spanish club’s financial difficulties.
According to a report from Sport, Barcelona would prefer to sell the Dutch international this summer but they have not been able to offload him so far.
Initially, the player was linked with a move to Manchester United and the Red Devils managed to agree on the deal with Barcelona as well. However, the player declined the move to Old Trafford.
It appears that Chelsea have now come forward to sign the Dutchman this summer and they are willing to offer a package worth around €80 million.
The 26-year-old Dutchman is regarded as one of the most talented central midfielders in European football and Chelsea could definitely use someone like him.
The likes of Jorginho have not been at their best for a while now at Chelsea have had to rely on the likes of Mateo Kovačić and N’Golo Kanté. Thomas Tuchel needs to add more quality and depth to his midfield and De Jong certainly looks like an ideal fit on paper.
It will be interesting to see if the Blues can convince the player to accept their offer now.
Chelsea can offer him Champions League football next season as opposed to Manchester United who missed out on a top four finish.
Barcelona need to reduce their wage bill in order to register their summer signings and the exit of De Jong would be ideal for them.
As far as the player is concerned, it is evident that he is unwilling to leave the club this summer but it is also a fact that he is unwanted at Barcelona right now. It would be better for him to move on this summer if an exciting opportunity presents itself.
