Chelsea to offer Timo Werner in a potential player-plus-cash deal for Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt

Timo Werner-Chelsea

Chelsea could reportedly add Timo Werner as part of a deal to sign Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The Blues are keen to improve their defence. At the same time, De Ligt reportedly wants to leave Juventus this summer after discussions over a new contract broke down in an explosive meeting with the Italian side recently.

According to reports, Chelsea could use the breakdown in talks between the Dutchman and his club to their advantage, and the Blues will add Werner in any deal that will bring him to London this summer.

According to Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Thomas Tuchel’s side are preparing a £38million bid, plus Werner, for the defender.

But the report also claims that Juve would want more for the 22-year-old with a release clause worth £103million.

De Ligt is keen on the move, but the Blues could be forced to improve their offer to prise the defender away from Allianz Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Old Lady are interested in Chelsea forward Werner. But it is reported that his wages, currently worth £270,000 per week, could cause a problem.

The German striker cost Chelsea £50m in June 2020, but has struggled at Stamford Bridge, scoring just nine Premier League goals in two full seasons with the club.

Last season, the 26-year-old started just 15 times in the league, scoring four goals.

De Ligt, meanwhile, was signed for £67m. Corriere dello Sport reports that the defender is unhappy with Juve’s demand that a new release clause of £98m is inserted into the proposed deal.

De Ligt reportedly believes that figure to be too high and wants Juve to place the figure near £68m.

There was also disagreement on wages. De Ligt is currently the highest-paid player in the squad.
