Manchester United

Manchester United’s quest for a top-four finish took a big hit last Wednesday as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Burnley.

The Old Trafford outfit took the lead in the 18th minute through Paul Pogba, who was making his Premier League return after over two months’ absence. But two minutes into the second half, Burnley levelled through Jay Rodriguez.

The result, coupled with West Ham‘s win over Watford, on the same pushed them out of the top four down to fifth. With Arsenal to play later tonight, the Red Devils could find themselves entering this matchday sitting in sixth.

The ‘Red Devils’ will hope that returning to Old Trafford will help them find their cutting edge after scoring exactly once in three consecutive competitive matches (W1, D1, L1). They will take confidence in the fact that they have won four of their last five PL outings here (L1) while never trailing at half-time during that period (HT: W1, D4).

Another source of encouragement will be their recent H2H record at this venue (W3, D2) which includes a 9-0 thrashing last term in what was United’s joint-biggest margin of victory in a league match in their 144-year history.

Possible Manchester United starting line-up

Southampton

Southampton continued their positive run in 2022 last night as they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 to record their sixth win of the season and push themselves into the top half of the table.

In an entertaining game at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, the Saints came out on top, stunning the top-four chasing Spurs courtesy of goals from Armando Broja, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams.

The win followed a 1-1 draw with Manchester City just before the winter break and once again showed how good Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side can be, especially against the big teams.

They will travel to Old Trafford looking to make it two consecutive away wins for the first time since June 2020. But they will have to be tighter at the back and sharp in attack as they have conceded 2+ goals in seven straight PL road games (W2, D1, L4).

Possible Southampton starting line-up

Fraser Forster; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jan Bednarek, Mohammed Salisu, Romain Perraud; Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse, Oriol Romeu, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Che Adams, Armando Broja.

Injured: Lyanco, Alex McCarthy,

Doubtful: Will Smallbone, Nathan Tella

Suspended: None
