Newcastle United are determined to improve their defensive options before the transfer window closes. The Premier League side are thought to be closing in on the signing of the Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker via Metro.

The 21-year-old has been in exceptional form for the German club since his move from Paris Saint Germain, and it will be interesting to see if he can succeed in the Premier League.

It is no secret that Newcastle will need to improve their defensive options this season, and the signing of a quality left-back could prove to be a wise decision for them.

Newcastle have conceded 43 goals in 21 league games so far, and they will have to tighten up at the back to beat the drop. The magpies are currently 18th in the league table, and they cannot afford to go down to the Championship this season.

They have already signed the likes of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood. It remains to be seen whether they can bring in a couple of other reinforcements before the window closes.

Along with the Bundesliga defender, Newcastle have been linked with several attacking midfielders as well, including Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard.

The magpies certainly have the finances to pull off these transfers after their takeover, and it remains to be seen whether they can get the deals across the line before the window shuts in just a week.

As far as Bakker is concerned, the 21-year-old is yet to reach his peak, and he could improve further with regular game time at Newcastle.

The magpies have an ambitious project at their disposal, and the possibility of moving to the Premier League is likely to be a tempting proposition for the 21-year-old Bundesliga defender.
