Newcastle will continue their quest for Premier League survival when they welcome Aston Villa to St. James’ Park on Sunday.

Venue: St. James’ Park

Key Statistics

Newcastle have not lost a home league H2H against Aston Villa since 2005 (W7, D6).

They are unbeaten in their last four PL games (W2, D2).

The hosts have conceded a joint-league high 11 goals beyond the 75th minute, six of which have come at home.

Aston Villa are the only side yet to draw a PL away match this season (W4, L7).

They have kept two clean sheets from their last three away games.

The visitors have scored just eleven goals away from our home this season. Only the current bottom three have scored fewer goals away from home this season.

Head to head

Aston Villa have been the more solid side in recent times. The visitors have won three of the last five meetings between both sides (all in the Premier League). But during the previous 15 meetings between both sides, Newcastle won five times and lost three times.

Newcastle United

Relegation-threatened Newcastle United will be looking for their third win in a row when they welcome Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa to St James’ Park this Sunday.

After taking maximum points away at Leeds United, the hosts followed that up with an overly impressive win over Frank Lampard‘s relegation-threatened Everton. Eddie Howe’s team seems to have found the recipe that works for the team and should fancy his side’s chances of getting another famous win here.

The English coach has made some impressive changes since taking over, and under him, Newcastle performance after the January transfer is encouraging. Aided by his oil-rich employers, the Magpies bolstered their ranks with the acquisition of Bruno Guimarães from Lyon, and such statement signings only reinforce their desire to remain in the Premier League. However, Norwich City’s recent form should be a cause for concern to them, with a single point separating them.

Should they win this game, it would mark their first streak of three PL wins since November 2018.

Possible Newcastle starting line-up

Martin Dubravka; Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey, Bruno Guimaraes; Ryan Fraser, Chris Wood, Allan Saint-Maximin.

Injured: Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden, Callum Wilson, Matt Ritchie, Federico Fernandez

Doubtful: Paul Dummett

Suspended: None

Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa will look to continue their unbeaten run in the league when they travel to Newcastle this Sunday.

The visitors come into this tie on the back of an entertaining yet frustrating draw with Leeds United in their last outing.

In a very open game at Villa Park, Leeds United took the lead through a sublime Daniel James goal. But January signing Phillipe Coutinho equalised for Villa shortly after. The Brazilian was involved again, supplying two assists for Jacob Ramsey to send Villa 3-1 inside the first 43 minutes.

The visitors struck shortly before the breakthrough James to make it 3-2. Diego There was more drama in the second half as defender Llorente equalised for Leeds United while Ezri Konsa was also sent off late in the second 45 minutes.

With that result, Steven Gerrard’s men come into this tie sitting in eleventh place. After a brush with relegation in time past, the ‘Villans’ are aiming to finish as high up as possible. After a series of additions in the summer, they will fancy their chances of finishing within the top ten, given they are just one point behind Southampton in 10th, having played a game less.

Possible Aston Villa starting line-up

Emiliano Martinez; Matty Cash, Callum Chambers, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne; John McGinn, David Luiz, Jacob Ramsey; Emi Buendia, Ollie Watkins, Philippe Coutinho.

Injured: Marvelous Nakamba, Emi Buendia

Doubtful: Leon Bailey

Suspended: Ezri Konsa
