Newcastle United’s new-look side after the January transfer window – worry for Chris Wood

Newcastle United had an eventful January transfer window, and the magpies have managed to improve their squad significantly with multiple signings.

The Premier League side improved their defence with the signings of Kieran TrippierDan Burn and Matt Targett.

They managed to sign the highly talented Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as well, and Eddie Howe improved his attacking department with the £25 million acquisition of Chris Wood from Burnley.

Here at Anytime football, we look at the potential starting lineup Newcastle could field during the second half of the season.

Martin Dubravka is expected to keep his place in goal after Newcastle failed to sign the likes of Dean Henderson towards the end of the window.

Defensive signings Trippier, Burn, and Targett, should partner the Newcastle star Jamaal Lascelles in the back four.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe has transformed Brazilian striker Joelinton into a midfielder recently, and he is expected to partner his compatriot Bruno Guimaraes at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield.

The likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden are likely to fight it out for the final midfield position.

Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are expected to be key starters in the attack. It remains to be seen whether January signing Chris Wood can force his way into the starting eleven ahead of the likes of Miguel Almiron and Ryan Fraser.

Newcastle paid £25 million for the former Burnley striker, but they will have to change their formation to accommodate two strikers during the second half of the season.

With the likes of Saint-Maximin and Fraser thriving in a wide role, Eddie Howe might be forced to pick just one number nine and Wilson is certainly a better option compared to Wood.

It will be interesting to see whether the £25 million January arrival can impress Eddie Howe and hold down a regular starting berth over the coming months now.
