Paul Pogba compared to former Man United flop Juan Sebastian Veron

The French midfielder’s struggles have been likened to former Argentine star Juan Sebastian Veron.

Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have likened Paul Pogbas struggles to former Manchester United flop Juan Sebastian Veron.

The Red Devils splashed the cash for Veron in 2001 during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign but he ended up as a failure.

The Argentine midfielder later moved to Chelsea but remained a fringe figure at Stamford Bridge for four seasons.

Former Premier League stars Shearer and Richards have claimed that Pogba’s struggles at Man Utd remind them of Veron.

Richards said (h/t Metro): “I just remember him being a flash in the pan, before he came to Man United you expected big things.

“He’s like Pogba, Pogba’s stayed longer but when you watch Pogba, you want him to do something brilliant every time and the same with Veron as well you wanted him to score 40-yard goal or 60-yard pass, it was just a little bit fast for him.

“He wanted to slow down the tempo a little bit. This is what I don’t understand, people always ask me, why did it not always happen? You’ve got that ability, he worked hard, it’s consistency. His ability was off the scale, wasn’t it, it’s one thing I’ve wondered. By all accounts, he worked really, was a good lad, it just didn’t work out.”

Shearer also chimed with Richard’s comments, stating that Pogba had created huge expectations as Veron did due to their sumptuous transfer fee.

Shearer commented: “I definitely agree with the Pogba comparison, think everyone looked at Veron and thought ‘wow, what a player,’ £28m which was a lot of money then and everyone was expecting that of him every week. Ability-wise it was in there.”

Pogba was expected to build on his impressive form with France national team in Euro 2020 but as it turns out, he has been mediocre like many of Man Utd stars this season.

The 28-year-old, who is currently sidelined with injury, will have his contract at Old Trafford run out next summer, with no significant progress in the renewal talks.
