Sporting Lisbon eyeing Cristiano Ronaldo reunion
Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer.
The 37-year-old has one year left on his current contract with the Premier League side, but he’s concerned about the lack of transfer activity at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have already missed out on Champions League qualification, and a player of Ronaldo’s ability cannot afford to spend another season without playing in Europe’s premier competition.
The Red Devils have brought in a new manager, but they are yet to bring in proper reinforcements in terms of signings.
According to Marca, Ronaldo has been linked with a return to Sporting Lisbon this summer.
Apparently, the Portuguese club believe that they can convince the 37-year-old to return to his boyhood club this summer.
The 37-year-old scored 24 goals across all competitions last season, and he’s still good enough to play at the highest level. A return to Sporting would be quite surprising right now.
Meanwhile, Sporting president Bruno Carvalho has publicly admitted that he would love for Ronaldo to end his career at the Portuguese club. Furthermore, the Portuguese international’s mother wishes to see him return to Sporting as well.
“He has to come back,” his mum Dolores told a Portuguese podcast last year.
“I already told him: ‘Son, before I die, I want to see you return to Sporting’. “‘Let’s see…’, he said.”
“Yes, without a doubt, I would love for Ronaldo to end his career here, at home,” said Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho.
“He represents a lot for us and it would be beautiful if he could end his career here. He is a world ambassador. He always speaks well about us and how fond he is of us. We are making a great effort for certain players to return to the club. We already did that with Nani [who spent the 2014-15 campaign on loan at Sporting] and we will see that many times.”
It will be interesting to see if the Portuguese club can put together an ambitious offer to bring him back to Lisbon in the coming weeks.
Cristiano Ronaldo offered to AS Roma
Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon are not the only club looking to sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, and the player’s agent Jorge Mendes has offered him to Roma as per Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Ronaldo has already worked with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, and their partnership was quite successful in Spain. It’ll be interesting to see if Roma can afford him this summer.
Mourinho helped the Italian club win a European trophy last season, and he will be hoping to challenge for the Scudetto next season.
Signing a player like Cristiano Ronaldo could make a massive difference for the Italian giants, and he could transform them in the final third.
Recent rumours have linked the player with a move to Bayern Munich and Chelsea as well, and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops over the next few weeks.
