Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Ajax defender Jurrien Timber.

According to reports, Premier League giants Chelsea are keen on the defender as well and both clubs are set to battle it out ahead of the January transfer window.

The 20-year-old defender has come through the famed Ajax Academy and he managed to break into the first-team scene last season.

The youngster was a part of the Netherlands squad during the European Championships as well.

The player has a contract with the Dutch outfit until the summer of 2024 and it is fair to assume that he will not be available for cheap during the winter transfer window.

Timber has been compared to the former Chelsea and Tottenham defender William Gallas and he has the potential to develop into a quality player for club and country.

Tottenham could definitely use more depth at the back and Timber could prove to be a quality long term investment for them.

Similarly, Chelsea have a couple of key defenders in their twilight years and they could use fresh young talent at the back. The likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva will need replacing soon.

The Blues are certainly more capable financially and they have a more ambitious project at their disposal.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham can fend off competition from their London rivals and secure the 20-year-old’s services in the coming months.
