Tottenham Hotspur agree deal to buy Djed Spence from Middlesbrough for around £20m

Tottenham borrow £175m to ease coronavirus impact

Tottenham have agreed on a deal to buy Middlesbrough right wing-back for about £20m. Djed Spence has just finished loan season at Nottingham Forest where he played a notable part in their promotion to the Premier League.

Djed Spence was named in the Professional Footballers’ Association’s Championship team as one of the country’s most highly regarded young defenders. Nottingham Forest wanted to retain the 21-year-old, but he chose to join Tottenham. Brentford had hoped to sign Spence as well.

Spence made his England Under-21s debut in March. The young player has held down a regular Championship place since December 2019, first with Middlesbrough and then Nottingham Forest.

According to The Guardian, Tottenham choose to invest with Spence more than Ivan Perisic, who is leaving Inter Milan at the end of his contract.
