Tuchel fuming about Chelsea’s decision to sell his favorite wing-back

Newcastle interested in signing the Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso

Ever since replacing Frank Lampard in the Chelsea dugout, Thomas Tuchel has transformed Chelsea from an inconsistent bunch of misfits to serious title contenders. The German boss famously won the elusive Champions League title with the Blues in just four months of being in charge.

The driving factor behind his immediate success has been the freedom the Chelsea hierarchy has bestowed upon him to meddle with the squad to his liking. His immaculate 3-5-2 system requires the players to play in a certain kind of manner with distinguished responsibilities.

Therefore, Tuchel has had the liberty to use his preferred personnel. In response, he has gone on to use Marcos Alonso as his first-choice left-back, restricting the £50m Ben Chilwell to the bench. However, this fact hasn’t stopped Chelsea from putting Alonso on the transfer market.

According to certain reports, Inter have rejuvenated their interest in the Spanish wing-back. Notably, Alonso has been linked with a move to the Italian giants in the past. Chelsea’s pursuit of Romelu Lukaku had tempted them to include Alonso in the deal. The Belgian did end up at Stamford Bridge but in exchange for £97.5m and no players.

Having used him as his preferred defensive option, Tuchel is reportedly unhappy with Chelsea’s management for their decision to part ways with Alonso. However, the Spaniard’s 30-plus age and Chilwell’s hefty wage deal might be compelling enough for the Blues to sell him after all.

Whether Tuchel will be deprived of his favourite left-back is yet to be seen. With Alonso’s current contract ending in 2023, the 3-capped Spain international could end up in Italy sooner than later.
