Conte could be on the brink if Inter Milan slip further in Serie A

Conte explains why Inter signed Alexis Sanchez

As Inter Milan were almost edged out of Champions League this season and are holding fifth position in Serie A, Antonio Conte seems to be walking a tightrope.

But the Italian who was supposed to restore Inter Milan to its place of dignity after years of mediocrity could be on the brink after a series of poor results and outburst in recent times.

Most people had tipped Inter to win their Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Madrid, who have had their own struggles.

But what followed was an insipid display by the Nerazzurri. A performance that has effectively ended their chance of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Only a miracle can see Inter qualify now for the last 16.

With that loss, Conte became the manager with the worst record in the Champions League in the history of Inter Milan. Indeed, his team has failed to win any of their opening Champions League games while only two of his last Champions League games have seen him win.

Results in the Serie A has not been any better, with Inter occupying fifth place after eight games. The goal was supposed to be to dethrone Juventus as club President Zhang Jindong said when calling for unity in the summer, but the most likely Milan club to do so this season is Inter’s San Siro cousins, AC Milan.

AC Milan occupy first place and are currently five points ahead of Conte’s side who have won just two of their last six games.

No doubt Inter has improved under Conte who led his team to the Europa League final last season. But the jury is now out on him.

The former Chelsea coach has not helped himself either, as he has often publicly criticised the club directors who have so far kept faith in him.

But if results don’t improve, you can bet that Zhang and his board of directors at Inter will start looking for other options.
