Mertens and Insigne on target as Napoli defeat Parma 2-0

The Partenopei were clinical in their opening game of Serie A

Napoli’s season is off and running with the win against Parma at Ennio Tardini.

Although it turned out to be a sedate first-half, Dries Mertens provided the breakthrough in the 63rd minute of the game.

Napoli skipper Lorenzo Insigne followed up with another goal as his side sealed off the game 2-0. Insigne continued to be a driving force for Napoli as he also had a shot denied by the crossbar after a brilliant exchange of play with Osimhen.

Victor Osimhen made his much-anticipated debut, coming on as a substitute in the final thirty minutes of the game.

The Nigerian was impressive with his interplay and relentless pace to beat the opponent defenders and almost scored a goal in his Serie A debut.

Osimhen was bought from LOSC Lille for a record fee of around 70m euros and had a good pre-season with Napoli.

Meanwhile, Parma missed the services of Dejan Kulusevski, who moved to Juventus after a fantastic season in Serie A.

Napoli enjoyed a late flourish under Gennaro Gattuso in Serie A last season although they ended up seventh in the table, failing to qualify for any of the European competitions.

Gattuso is looking to push the boundaries this time as his side would look to end the title dominance of Juventus. The Partenopei came close to knocking the Bianconeri off the perch in the past seasons.

Napoli will face Genoa in their next Serie A fixture.
