Italian giants AS Roma completed the free signing of Nemanja Matic from Manchester United earlier in the summer, and the Serbian international has revealed that he wants to overtake Frank Lampard‘s number of appearances as a player under Jose Mourinho.

The Chelsea midfielder played 215 games under the Portuguese manager, and Matic is currently on 159.

The experienced defensive midfielder joked that a reunion with Mourinho was on his mind this summer, and he chose to turn down other opportunities to play under the Portuguese manager once again.

He said to GOAL: “With Mourinho, we know each other well, and I am happy to find him here. I’m here for him, but I’m happy to be part of this great club. It’s attractive for players, and it was for me.

“I am trying to beat Lampard as the player with the most appearances under Mourinho. I think the team has great quality players with youngsters who can be important in the future. I can’t wait to start.”

He has worked with Mourinho at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge in the past, and he believes that the decision to join Roma is the right one at this stage of his career.

Apparently, the player had multiple offers when he decided to leave Manchester United. Still, Roma’s project appealed to him, and he is keen on trying out a new challenge in Italy now.

That 33-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the capital club in Serie A, and is hoping to earn an extension on the back of some impressive performances in the coming season.

The Serbian was one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League at Chelsea, and there is no doubt that he could be a useful option for Roma, even though he is in his twilight years.

He has deteriorated physically, but he is still an intelligent player with an impressive reading of the game. Undoubtedly, he could help Roma tighten up at the back with his shielding of the centre-backs. His experience and leadership qualities could also be valuable to the dressing room on and off the pitch.

Furthermore, the Serbian has won multiple trophies throughout his career, and his winning experience could prove to be vital in Roma’s quest for silverware next season.

Mourinho guided the Italian club to a European trophy last season, and he will be hoping to launch a title challenge next year.

With Inter Milan and Juventus currently vulnerable, Roma will fancy their chances of upsetting the odds.

Matic has already won the Premier League under Jose Mourinho, and he will be hoping to help the Portuguese manager win the Italian league title next season.
