Manchester City

Manchester City will look to get the first win in this mouthwatering clash when they welcome Diego Simeone’s hard playing Atletico Madrid side.

The Cityzens, qualified for this stage of the competition by beating Sporting Lisbon 5-0 on aggregate, thanks to a 5-0 win in the first leg at Lisbon.

They come into this tie on the back of a 2-0 win over Burnley. The result kept them at the top of the PL table, one point ahead of Liverpool. And so, their chances of winning a historic treble remain and they will now hope to avoid the fare of their neighbours, Manchester United, who Atletico sent packing in the last round.

Given their form, Pep Guardiola’s side cannot be considered the favourites for this game. The former Bayern Munich boss also has a bad record in the UCL against Atletico Madrid as his Bayern Munich side were eliminated by Diego Simeone’s side in the 2015/16 UCL season.

He will be looking to get his revenge in this game as he seeks to take Manchester City to their first UCL title win after the heartbreak of last season.

Possible Manchester City starting line-up

Ederson Moraes, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Joao Cancelo, Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling.

Injured: Ruben Dias

Doubtful: Cole Palmer

Suspended: Benjamin Mendy

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid continued their remarkable revival under Diego Simeone last time out as they beat Alaves 4-1, thanks to braces from João Felix and Luis Suarez.

The win made it six consecutive wins for Simeone’s side, solidifying their top-four La Liga position in the process.

They are unbeaten in eight games and will travel to Manchester confidently after enjoying their last visit to this city when they beat Manchester United to knock them out of this competition.

Diego Simeone will also be confident of getting a result here as he knocked Liverpool out of this competition the last time he faced an English team in this round of the competition.

He also beat Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich side over two legs, although that was when away goals counted. And so he will have the psychological advantage over their hosts, who already consider them a plucky side.

Possible Atletico Madrid starting line-up

Jan Oblak; Felipe, Stefan Savic, Reinaldo Mandava; Marcos Llorente, Renan Lodi, Koke, Rodrigo De Paul, Sime Vrsaljko; Joao Felix, Angel Correa.

Injured: Yannick Carrasco, Hector Herrera

Doubtful: Jose Gimenez

Suspended: None
