Atletico Madrid 5-0 Eibar: Llorente, Correa braces take Simeone’s side back to the summit

Atletico Madrid picked up a thumping 5-0 win over Eibar earlier today in the Spanish League.

Diego Simeone‘s men have been in mixed form over the last few weeks and they will be delighted to have picked up a morale-boosting victory here.

The win tonight gives them a chance to reassert their title credentials and Atletico Madrid are well and truly back in the title race now.

Absence of key stars

The Spanish giants were without two of their first choice attackers – Luis Suarez and Joao Felix. However, the backup players managed to step up and produce an emphatic performance today.

The likes of Angel Correa and Yannick Carrasco scored for Atletico Madrid to take them back to the top of the table with 70 points from 31 matches. The home side are now four points ahead of Real Madrid and five points clear of Barcelona who both have a game in hand.

Atletico Madrid were dominant from the start and they enjoyed a lot of possession. However, the Spanish outfit struggled to create a clear cut opportunity until Angel Correa broke the deadlock.

The opening goal of the game settled the nerves and Atletico started to put more pressure on the opposition. The likes of Koke, Herrera and Saul dominated proceedings from the centre of the park and Eibar struggled to put together attacking moves.

Simeone will be pleased with the finishing of his attackers today. Atletico Madrid have missed key chances in the last few weeks and that has resulted in the loss of vital points.

The defeat today leaves Eibar at the bottom of the Spanish League with 23 points and it will be interesting to see if they can bounce back strongly in the next game and finish the season  on a high.

Marcos Llorente on fire

Midfielder Marcos Llorente started in the attack for Atletico Madrid earlier today and the Spaniard managed to deliver an outstanding performance for the home side. He scored a brace for Atletico Madrid.

Llorente has been in impressive goalscoring form ever since Simeone transformed him into an attacking midfielder. Initially, the midfielder was signed for a defensive role.

With just seven matches remaining in the league, Atletico Madrid will be hoping to go all the way and secure the League title now.

Apart from the win, another positive for Atletico Madrid will be the return of Moussa Dembele from injury. The Frenchman could make a big difference for Simeone’s side in the closing stages of the season.
