Bayern Munich will look to book their place in the quarter-finals round of the Champions League when they welcome Austrian side RB Salzburg to Allianz Arena for the second leg of their knockout tie.

Venue: Allianz Arena

Key Statistics

Bayern Munich won all six games in the groups for the second time. They first achieved the feat in 2019/20, when they lifted their sixth Champions League title.

Robert Lewandowski scored in his first five games in this season’s Champions League. He has nine tournament goals for the campaign, and 82 in 103 appearances.

Lorey Sane is Bayern’s next best goal threat in the 2021/22 Champions League, with five of his own and four assists.

Bayern have won all five of their home games in the competition against Austrian visitors, scoring 15 times in the process

The 30-time Bundesliga champions have scored exactly double the number of goals in the Champions League (550) as they have conceded (275). None of the other 146 clubs to have played in the competition (group stage to final) has scored more than twice as many as they have conceded.

The hosts have nine wins in their previous 10 ties at this stage. Their overall last-16 record is W13, L4.

Bayern have won all three of their two-legged knockout ties against Austrian opposition.

RB Salzburg are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions (W4, D3).

They have also lost nine of their last 15 European matches on their travels.

The visitors have been beaten in six of their last nine games in Germany, recording just two wins in the process.

Head to head

Both sides have met three times in the Champions League. Bayern Munich have won two of those meetings while the other ended in a draw.

Bayern Munich

After a disappointing outing in Salzburg last month, Bayern Munich will look to take advantage of their status as hosts in the second leg of this UCL tie.

The Bavarians were expected to roll over their lowly Austrian counterparts over two legs. But rather than boss the game, the Bavarians were outplayed for most of the first leg. Despite being far from their best in the game, they managed to level late on through Kingsley Coman after Chukwubuike Adamu had put the hosts ahead.

The result made it 22 away games in the competition without a defeat for Bayern and they will fancy their chances of finishing the job in front of their supporters on Wednesday night.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side won all six of their Group E matches to finish top of the section, beating Barcelona twice in the process, and the club are playing in the knockout round of this competition for the 18th time.

They have reached the quarter-finals stage of the UCL or better in nine of their last 10 seasons, so it would be a tremendous surprise if the German outfit were not present in the final eight, with Salzburg the underdogs in the tie.

Meanwhile, Nagelsmann’s side will enter this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday, which has left them nine points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

Possible Bayern Munich starting line-up

Manuel Neuer; Benjamin Pavard, Niklas Süle, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernandez; Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala; Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller, Lorey Sane; Robert Lewandowski

Injured: Alfonso Davies (heart), Leon Goretzka (knee), Corentin Tolisso (hamstring).

RB Salzburg

Australian Bundesliga champions Salzburg will look to complete the job they started last month at Salzburg in Munich on Tuesday.

The Austrian side come into this tie on level ground after an exciting 1-1 draw in the first round. In truth, they were the better team in that game and will feel disappointed that they couldn’t hold on or double their lead in that game.

What they couldnt do in the Red Bull Arena, they will now hope to do at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

They will come into this tie with swagger in their step after a 4-0 home victory against Altach on Saturday took them 19 points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga. Chikwubuike Adamu, Maximilian Wöber and Luka Sucic all scored within the first 26 minutes, with German forward Karim Adeyemi adding the fourth.

Meanwhile, the visitors will be without Noah Okafor, who is ruled out with the thigh injury he picked up in the first leg. Elsewhere, Ousmane Diakite, Sekou Koita, Bryan Okoh, Jerome Onguene, Benjamin Sesko, Oumar Solet and Albert Vallci are all out with varying injuries.

Possible Salzburg starting line-up

Philipp Kohn; Rasmus Nissen Kristensen, Piatkowski, Maximilian Wober, Andreas Ulmer; Nicolas Seiwald, Nicolas Capaldo, Mohamed Camara, Brenden Aaronson; Karim Adeyemi, Chukwubuike Adamu.

Injured: Ousmane Diakite, Sekou Koita, Noah Okafor, Bryan Okoh, Jerome Onguene, Benjamin Sesko, Oumar Solet and Albert Vallci.
