Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to change his international allegiance under the new FIFA rules.

The 20-year-old winger is expected to represent Ghana instead of England.

The winger held a meeting with the President of the West African country to discuss how to improve footballing infrastructure and opportunities for children and young people.

It was the country’s President who asked the minister of Youth and Sports to try and convince the Chelsea winger to represent Ghana, and their efforts have been successful.

England are well stocked with talented young wingers, and Hudson-Odoi would have struggled to get regular game time for Gareth Southgate‘s side.

His decision to represent Ghana could see him play international football more regularly, and it will be a welcome boost for the West African nation.

Furthermore, reports add that Hudson-Odo’s decision to represent Ghana has a lot to do with the racist abuse dished out to the England players after the defeat in the Euro 2020final as well.

Marcus RashfordJadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were subjected to racial abuse after missing their penalties in the shootout defeat to Italy.

The Chelsea winger has been capped three times for the England senior side, but the new FIFA rules state that players can now switch national teams as long as they have played no more than three matches.

FIFA rules state: “Players can now switch national teams provided they are eligible to represent them as long as they have played no more than three matches (including friendlies), none of the matches were in the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup or confederation competition, and they all happened before the player turned 21.”
