Italy managed to beat England in the final of European Championship after a penalty shootout earlier.
Gianluigi Donnarumma and Jordan Pickford have produced strong performances for their respective teams in the Euros so far, and they stepped up to deliver in the final as well.
The Italian international has been outstanding in the Euro 2020 this summer. He managed to deliver two back to back match-winning displays in the penalties against Spain and England.
Donnarumma also pulled off numerous important saves throughout the tournament.
The player is apparently heading to Paris Saint-Germain this summer, and the French outfit have got themselves an elite talent. The 22-year-old will sort out Italy and PSG’s goalkeeping position for the next decade.
The Italian has been chosen as the player of the tournament, and it was richly deserved. Donnarumma is only 22, but he has already established himself as one of the finest keepers in world football.
Before the tournament, there were calls to drop the Everton keeper in favour of Nick Pope. However, the Burnley goalkeeper picked up an injury and Jordan Pickford retained his starting berth in Euros.
The Everton ace has justified his selection throughout the tournament, and he was beaten just twice in seven games.
Pickford produced a masterclass in the shootout as well, saving the penalties of Jorginho and Andrea Belotti. He will be disappointed that his teammates could not score their penalties to secure the trophy in the end.
Neither keeper deserved to end up on the losing side tonight. Pickford will be hoping to bounce back strongly and make his mark in next year’s World Cup as well.
