France did well to come back from behind to win the UEFA Nations League final against Spain 2-1 at the San Siro earlier tonight.

Spain did well to take the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal on the 64th minute but they were pegged back immediately through Karim Benzema two minutes later and Kylian Mbappe backed the winner on the 80th minute for the world champions.

Here at Anytime football, we look at the three major talking points from tonight’s contest.

Impeccable French defence in the first half

Luis Enrique’s men struggled to break down the French defence in the first 45 minutes and Spain barely had a sniff of the goal.

Despite not managing to create any real chances for themselves, France were well organised at the back and they kept the Spanish attack under control.

Spain had extended spells of position in the first 45 minutes but most of their passing lacked incision and purpose.

Karim Benzema is in the form of his life

The Real Madrid striker has been exceptional for club and country ever since he came back into the international fold after a hiatus.

Benzema scored a remarkable goal against Belgium and he followed it up with another crucial strike against Spain earlier tonight.

The French international striker has registered 17 goal involvements for his club in 10 games so far this season and he seems to be replicating his red hot form on the international stage as well.

Kylian Mbappe will be relieved with his winner

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has come under a lot of criticism after his penalty miss during the European Championships and there were rumours earlier on in the week that Mbappe could take a break from the French national team.

Tonight’s winner against Spain will have given him a much-needed confidence boost and it will also keep the critics off his back for a while.
