Belgium 8-0 Belarus: Red Devils pick up a thumping win despite resting Lukaku, De Bruyne

Leandro Trossard-Belgium

Belgium picked up an 8-0 win over Belarus in the World Cup Qualifiers earlier tonight.

The win takes the Red Devils to the top of Group E with seven points from three matches.

Goals from Leandro Trossard, Jeremy Doku, Christian Benteke, Michy Batshuayi, Hans Vanaken and Dennis Praet ensure a massive win for the hosts.

Belgium enjoyed 68% ball possession with 15 shots on target tonight. Belarus will be left wondering what could have been had the hosts gone into the game with a full-strength lineup.

Manager Roberto Martinez decided to leave star players like Dries Mertens, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku on the bench in order to give them some much-needed rest but his fringe players stepped up and got the job done spectacularly.  Thibaut Courtois was left out of the squad.

The likes of Trossard and Batshuayi played like they had a point to prove tonight. Trossard has been exceptional for Brighton but he has had few opportunities to prove himself for the national team because of the quality Belgium have in the wide areas.

Injury to the likes of Eden Hazard allowed Trossard to show his quality and he will have made an impression on Martinez with his brace.

Meanwhile, Batshuayi has been loaned out by Chelsea after failing to make his mark at Stamford Bridge and the striker will be hoping that his performance for his country can convince Thomas Tuchel to give him a chance next season. The striker scored a goal and set up another for Praet in the second half.

Batshuayi has scored six goals in his last four games for Belgium.

Youngsters like Doku managed to score a goal and create two others tonight.

Another crucial event that marked the occasion was the Belgian team flaunting black T-shirts featuring the words “football supports change”, in reference to the plight of migrant workers in Qatar, hosts of the next World Cup.
