Serbia 2-2 Portugal: Serbia fought back to cancel out Jota’s double, Ronaldo denied the winner during stoppage time

Diogo Jota-Portugal

Portugal were denied three clear points after conceding two goals in the second half.

Portugal were held to a 2-2 draw by Serbia as Diogo Jota’s first-half double went in vain.

The visitors made slight alterations to the starting line-up to the game they faced against Azerbaijan as players like Sergio Oliveira, Cedric and Diogo Jota were given opportunities.

Serbia looked equally strong, possessing the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filipe Kostic, Ajax’s Dusan Tadic in the attack. Sergei Milenkovic-Savic’s presence in the midfield and Fiorentina defender Milinkovic made them look like a tough opponent on paper.

Contrarily, Portugal were in the driving seat after Liverpool’s Jota netted a double inside the first 45 minutes.

The hosts responded well when they halved the deficit in the opening minute of the second half through Mitrovic before Kostic levelled the score at the hour-mark.

The turning point of the game was the half time substitution of Nemanja Radonjic, who would set up two goals for Serbia.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who had a quiet game, had a strike denied by the officials in stoppage time, although his effort looked like it was going past the goal-line.

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes had another ordinary day in the office as he failed to make his impact for the second time in a row.

Following their unconvincing win over Azerbaijan, Portugal have been held to a draw by Serbia due to a lacklustre second half-display.
