AC Milan

After a rough patch just before the World Cup break, AC Milan seem to have steadied the shop at just the crucial time.

The San Siro side made a winning return to league action on Wednesday as they beat Salernitana 2-1 away from home, courtesy of two quick first-half goals from Rafael Leao and Sandro Tonali.

The win was Milan’s third in their last four league games, and the result kept them on the heels of table-topping Napoli, who dropped points against Inter Milan. So Stefano Pioli’s men come into this tie sitting five points behind the top spot and with their quest for back-to-back Scudetto titles still intact.

They will welcome Roma to San Siro in good spirits, having won their last four home games while scoring 2+ goals in each game. And given their record in their last four head-to-heads at home (W3, D1), they will be confident of taking maximum points against Jose Mourinho’s side.

Possible AC Milan starting line-up

Anton Tatarusanu, Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori, Theo Hernandez, Ismaël Bennacer, Sandro Tonali, Alexis Saelemaekers, Brahim Diaz, Rafael Leão, Olivier Giroud.

Injured: Fodé Ballo, Ante Rebic, Divock Origi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alessandro Florenzi

Doubtful: Mike Maignan

Suspended: None

AS Roma

Jose Mourinho’s Roma side made a winning return to league action as they beat Bologna 1-0 courtesy of a sixth-minute penalty by Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The win ended a run of three consecutive league games without a win for the Rome-based club, who entered the World Cup break sitting in seventh place.

But they have now moved to sixth and are crucially just three points behind the top four.

They will now travel to Milan looking to make it back-to-back Serie A wins for the first time since August when they beat Salernitana and Cremonese in their first two league games of the season.

Having been suspended and banned for two games, due to a straight red card in the last match of 2022 against Torino, on November 13, Mourinho will again not be on the touchline when Roma visit Milan at San Siro on Sunday night.

But the visitors will care little that Mourinho won’t be in the dug-out given that they have won all their Serie A games without the Special One guiding them from the touchline. Moreover, they will feel that a win here is possible, given that they are unbeaten in their last seven away games in all competitions (W5, D2).

Possible Roma starting line-up

Rui Patricio, Gianluca Mancini, Chris Smalling, Roger Ibañez, Zeki Celik, Benjamin Tahirovic, Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini, Stephan El Shaarawy, Paulo Dybala, Nicolò Zaniolo.

Injured: Ebrima Darboe, Andrea Belotti

Doubtful: None

Suspended: None
