"He's not Ronaldo!" Emmanuel Petit: Messi'd struggle in Premier League

Lionel Messi‘s time at Barcelona has come to an end after 21 years.

The 34-year-old Argentine superstar will not renew his contract with the Spanish giants because of their financial difficulties and the player is now expected to move on in search of a new challenge.

Messi’s contract with Barcelona expired in July but the player was expected to sign a renewal with the Spanish club on reduced terms because of their financial limitations.

However, the Spanish La Liga regulations regarding player registration have made it impossible for Barcelona and Messi to move forward with the contract renewal.

Here at Anytime football, we look at the possible destinations for Lionel Messi.

Manchester City

The Premier League champions are loaded with cash and they are certainly one of the favourites to land the Argentine superstar this summer.

Furthermore, the presence of Pep Guardiola at the helm could help Manchester City tempt Messi to move to England.

The Argentine star enjoyed great success under the Spanish manager during their time together at Barcelona and Messi might just be keen on a reunion this summer.

Paris Saint-Germain

The French giants are another club financially capable of pulling off the transfer and a reunion with Neymar cannot be ruled out.

There have been reports that the French outfit have already begun talks with the player’s representatives regarding a summer move.

PSG have been trying to establish themselves as giants of European football and adding Lionel Messi to their attack alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar would certainly enhance their profile as a European superpower.

Outside chance: Chelsea or the MLS

Premier League giants Chelsea are also capable of spending big money on the former Barcelona player.

The Champions League winners need to improve their attacking options and signing the greatest player in the history of football will certainly be a tempting proposition for them.

Meanwhile, the MLS is also an option and Messi has been linked with a move to America in the past.

That said, the player is at the peak of his powers right now and it would be very surprising if he chose to move to the United States now.

Messi is still very capable of running the show at a top European club and a move to America might be feasible in the latter stages of his career.
